What is the Connecticut Nursery & Landscape Association?

The CNLA represents 51% of the total agricultural production in Connecticut and is one of the leading voices throughout the state for the green industry.  Our industry provides jobs to 30,000 people with more needed.  Our industry keeps more than 46,000 acres in agriculture, of which 23 percent is open space and at least 3 percent is in a land preservation program.  CNLA’s nearly three hundred green industry members include wholesale and retail nurseries, garden centers, landscape contractors, florists, arborists, landscape architects, landscape designers, suppliers, educators, researchers and allied businesses. CNLA members are professionals who take pride in their work and uphold the highest standards in horticulture, environmental practices and land stewardship. CNLA is also dedicated to the development and implementation of programs that provide skilled and licensed workers and contribute to the well-being of Connecticut’s communities and environment.

CNLA’s mission is to promote, enhance and protect Connecticut’s green industries.  As a member of CNLA, you and your company will enjoy the advantages of our many services, educational and training programs, professional certifications, networking, advocacy, leadership opportunities, industry research, activities and more.

Our association offers many benefits:

  • Educational meetings, functions and trade shows that offer technical training and pesticide credit.
    • CCH – The CNLA has the state’s only professional certification program for the nursery industry. Our 13-week Connecticut Certified Horticulturist program challenges nursery/landscape tradespeople to lift their standing as experts. Once you are certified in Connecticut, the certification is accepted in all six New England states!
    • TRADE SHOWS & EDUCATION – CNLA members get special low member rates to our programs throughout the year. Our two trade shows show you and your staff the newest products to keep you ahead of the competition. Our premier events are the January Winter Symposium & Expo and the July Summer Field Day.
  • CNLA published an Economic Impact Study.
  • Direct link to federal, state and local legislative issues.  CNLA advocates for you and your business at all levels of government. We employ lobbyists at the State Capitol in Hartford. CNLA testifies regularly on bills and regulations which include invasive plants, pesticides, agricultural issues, labor issues, nursery and landscape issues, transportation, budget & taxation, etc.   And every regular member is automatically enrolled in the national ANLA Lighthouse Program, giving you updates and action alerts on laws and bills in Washington.
  • Close ties with the CT Experiment Station and UCONN Extension, which provide training and up-to-date information on current issues and trends pertinent to the green industry.
  • State-wide recognition of outstanding landscape design, construction and maintenance projects judged by peers within the industry.
  • Our website, www.CNLA.biz is a clearinghouse of information.  Member companies are listed for the public to find you. You can find key information about organizations and the industry and register for upcoming events and trade shows conveniently online.
  • CNLA is working with state agencies and UCONN to assist students and future employees in training for careers in the landscape industry and provide member companies with trained, skilled workers.
  • CNLA has representatives serving on the CT Water Planning Council Advisory Group and the CT Invasive Plant Council
  • CNLA publishes a biweekly newsletter sent via email to the CNLA membership keeping members informed of the latest news in the industry and during the legislative session includes updates from our lobbyists at the state capitol.
  • CNLA’s public projects illustrate the goodwill of our industry . . . whether it is volunteers from the industry and Ag students decorating the Governor’s Residence for Christmas, or exhibiting at the Connecticut Flower & Garden Show, or landscaping the 9/11 memorial in Westport, or our annual re-landscaping of a non-profit site through the Plant Connecticut program, the CNLA presents a positive image for the industry to the news media. CNLA is the industry’s spokesman to the news media.
  • CNLA members get vital legal information and advice to help their business every day including technical and legal questions as well as advice on complying with regulations. They can call Connecticut’s top labor attorney, Robert Noonan, for quick answers on employee problems.
